Sign in on the Dropbox home-page and complete the getting started tour, this should give you another 250MB space.

Look out for Dropquests
A while back, Dropbox started a contest called Dropquest 2011 (Its over now), completing the quest would give the user a bonus of 1GB space. Dropbox hinted that they might have more quests in the future.
Verify that you are a student
Students get 500MB per referal and a maximum bonus space of 16GB for free. If you are elligible go to dropbox.com/edu and verify yourself as a student

Why Dropbox is incredibly useful?
Dropbox creates a folder on every device you install it on. It can be installed on Windows, OS X, Linux, and popular mobile OS's as well. Whatever changes you do on one computer are automatically synchronised on others. Moreover you can restore old and deleted versions of files. The files in your Dropbox can be accessed any-time and anywhere via the web interface at Dropbox.com.

Dropbox is great for sharing files, you can keep a specific folder in the Dropbox in synch with another Dropbox user's account. This is great for collaborative team work like making documents together.
