How do SVG Render on various platforms?

I read an article about " Why Aren’t You Using SVG? " and wrote a post " Great post worth reading as a Xara user: "Why Aren’t You Using SVG?" " on the Xara web designer chat channel on the Talkgraphics.com forum .
I got a reply from " Soquili " where there was a link to a SVG test page . I decided to test that page in various browsers using the online browser test site browserstack.com . Browserstack.com lets you choose between a set of various OS platforms and browser versions. It is a great tool for people building websites, as you can test your sites on a set of various browser versions, testing if things look okay for users with a particular browser in a particular OS.

Some browser statistics

I want to include some statistics. On Statcounter Globalstats you can see statistics on amoung other the use of browsers. At the time of writing (2012-06-09) the top 5 looks like this:

  1. Chrome
  2. IE
  3. Firefox
  4. Safari
  5. Opera

Period: 10th May to 8th June 2012

The stat does not include versions , but the picture is clear: Chrome is getting more and more users. The statistics vary over country of cause.

Screenshoots from browserstack.com

Now let me show you the screenshoots I made using browserstack.com. The tests are ordered in the same order of the stats of which browser is used most today.

So the above table shows that 17 out of 20 browsers supports SVG! The browsers are main stream browsers, so it is likely that people visiting your site will have a browser which supports SVG. If you want to be sure, you can use tests in the browser which tests the version of browser people use. If they have browsers which does not support SVG, you can serve an alternative bitmap version.

Read about CSS conditional comments on the quirksmode website.
To test if a person is using a microsoft internet explorer browser before version 8 you can use:

<!--[if lt IE 8]>
According to the conditional comment this is IE lower than 8
<![endif]-->

Does your browser render SVG?

If you see a confident man below, your browser renders SVG.

The SVG file above have been exported from Xara Designer Pro X , so if you are creating your graphics in that application, you can start thinking about SVG.
