The art that you will see here, on these pages: The Herb Barn, and Pennyroyal Papers web sites has been done by me, Barbara Brookie White.
I am publishing my projects, sketches, and finished examples here mainly to preserve the images and save them for my friends and family. I hope you enjoy them and will leave a note in my Guest Book if you desire.
The portraits are from the late 1950's until the present. Portraiture has always been my specialty. A chance encounter with a gallery owner in 1958 started my career in that direction. It was a unique situation that allowed me to work a few weeks a year with various philanthropic organizations throughout the state of Indiana. The remainder of the time I worked from my studio on individual commissions and on entries for exhibition and competition.
Traveling statewide, to do portraits, stopped with the birth of our first son,  and a new interest began.

The Herb Barn
The Herb Barn was established as a hobby to collect and sell antiques. It was housed in an old barn that became the centerpiece for a herb garden. The combination of herb & dried floral arrangements with 18th & 19th Century antiques was a new concept in 1969 and The Herb Barn became a favorite Indiana destination for many groups and individuals. At the same time a friend asked us to stock potpourris and supplies. A little searching and research encouraged us to make our own blends but it required packaging and labels. By 1972 I was designing paper sachet envelopes for our hand blended fragrances, note papers, gift wrap paper, and labels . Requests for wholesale soon followed and Pennyroyal Papers & Publications, Inc was formed to handle the wholesale accounts.
Pennyroyal Papers & Publications
My designs for all kinds of paper products started to catch the eye of museum shops, historic preservations, and store owners seeking high quality and distinctive ideas. We took them to major trade marts and shows where we also sold to international buyers and caught the attention of some major magazine editors.
Never dreaming, in the beginning, that a passion for drawing and painting would have so many twists and turns, I look back with a feeling of gratification and amazement for the opportunities that were open for me.
It would be impossible to accomplish any of this without the support of my husband, Alan, who helped and contributed as sales manager, floral designer, creative director for shows, over saw The Herb Barn store operation. He managed our two sons when I worked long, late hours to meet deadlines.
Lampwork beads
Are you curious about glass bead lampwork? How glass beads are made is not a familiar topic here in Indiana and much of the mid-west or central parts of the USA for that matter. Even fewer people know it as an art form.
Melting glass in an oxygen/propane torch, winding and twisting it into glass gardens, stretching it into yards and yards of ribbon or latticino canes to decorate beads, and dreaming of the challenges to come have all become my new passion.
This "about me" is brief and skims the surface of the arts I do and love. The real message is about using the talent God gives you, doing the very best that you can and sharing with everyone who shares your passion.

                                Daylilies and herb gardens

                                surround our turn-of-the-

                                century barn and home.

                                We have over 200

                                cultivars of daylilies and

several thousand seedings                                        that I have hybridized since 1998.                             The herbs are used for fun and fragrance in

potpourris, seasonings, and arrangements.

Herbs and flowers are a major love and source of inspiration  for me.  I incorporate them  into every thing I do including cooking, another favorite past time.
