direct action 2013 (E)

... is a performance gathering taking place from may 3rd to 5th at the "abteilung für alles andere" in berlin-mitte, during the third edition of the "month of performance art – berlin" in may 2013. running for its fourth year now and in close cooperation with the institut für alles mögliche, da*13 will feature a wide range of performances and experiments in 4 sections:
a*(invited artists) - b*(students) - c*(open stage) - d*(linked projects)

the festival topic this year focuses on "performance on*with*through language" and is bringing together artists under the theme of non-expressive-, non-dramatic-actions, minimal moves, conceptual gestures and media interventions.

interested in providing space for people working with different approaches and practices in the field of performance art, da*13 will create an open and international platform for multi-layered actions, discussions, and networking over the course of three days. da*13 highlights the concept of "works-in-progress" - giving the participants an opportunity to discuss and develop their work further during the festival. Also each contribution will be related to one another since leftovers will not be removed. the marks and traces that result from one action will be the initial setting for the the following performance.

[ direct action ] took place for the first time in september 2010 at the institut für alles mögliche (zentrale) in berlin with 26 participating artists from seven different countries.
in may 2011 the festival was presented in the frame of the first edition of the month of performance art berlin. 76 artists from 26 countries followed the call for performance on/for/at video. almost all works got shown during a two-day screening that was accompanied by a programme with invited live acts such as oliver breitenstein (de), mike edgerton (usa/nl) and marion ritzmann (ch). the screening programme was later on shown at exhibitions in hannover and penzance, uk.
in 2012 the event shaped up to be the conceptual part of the month of performance art and hosted 38 artists for an intense weekend at the abteilung für alles andere in berlin-mitte. special guests were karl heinz jeron (d), lisa jeschke (d/uk), florian kuhlmann (d) and students of the academy of visual arts leipzig.

"SPILLAGE" & "POLIS", 2012
Much of what is absurd - as Camus understood it - in the world goes unnoticed or ignored. I go out in search of examples of the absurd; sometimes abject, sometimes comical. The emphasis is firmly upon identifying and capturing a moment and highlighting the absurdity within that moment. The search is a performance too - passive/active, I become the intervention, having claimed ownership of that moment.

"The language between us", 2012
The language between us draws on my ongoing interest in language acquisition. This self portrait performance video was influenced by Russian psychoanalysis Mikhail Bakhtin’s idea that language only exists in the interaction with the other and it is within this exchange that meaning is created for the individual.
After living in Norway for the past few years and learning Norwegian for my partner I am interested in the appropriation of words; how one can take a language (foreign or mother tongue) and make it one’s own.
The results of the process of acquiring a foreign or patriarchal language have similar repercussions on the sense of self which are played out on the body.

Artist Bio:
Nina Ross is a Master of Fine Art (Research) candidate at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. Nina has exhibited nationally and internationally including Experimenta Speak to me 5th International Biennial of Media Art, One Night Only Oslo, Felt space Adelaide, Peloton Sydney, Screen space Melbourne and at the Queensland Centre for Photography. Writing Through #2: Direct Action 2013
A text will be composed by "writing through" (i.e. collecting fragments from) language that is spoken or written during performances held throughout the Direct Action festival.

" Start zu machen. Alles möglich. Ein oder andere oder Hand in englisch. The conceptual part in Berlin tomorrow night, Nina interrupted. Eggs dance the way I thing with somebody in Sweden, that's the germ, a little less than an hour. There aren't any characters, no heros or villains. Four seconds. Spillage maybe. Pretty unusual. A rival gang shot your own narrative. The images can injure a diversion. Home, him, my front door. Him, things, too long a fact. World, I, he. Him, he, someone. I, I, plane. Us, her, home. Some questions I see: perf web. Index file. Samstag um 16:34 Uhr. Was it fun to sound still? Show signs? Noise a story? Second sense strange. The space merging to explain me, an alien in the riverpartyscene, an English woman in the fancy train. Newly acquired kid with knife. A point of fight you split by humming as subtitles empty the poem. Berlin a woman half-removed, the morning says Nacht, that's great, not exactly the same though. Inside hearing. You record to listen. Sounds okay. Unbenannt. East and losing rain in Chicago. Inside scratch your eyes, a space to your mind, tasty and cutting you. No muffins but donuts. Here or Berlin. Should we move to chapter two? What it is about: Food and breakfast. I try to talk on my seams. Being in it. I tried to sink language, a house with brooms. Cardboard wings make you smaller on the pavement. Closer now. The words they wrote down architecture too, in the way a big bubble you're drawing on the wall blue. What does fascinating mean? You can write it down and pay tomorrow. It will be masses. They laugh at any given monument. My thesis a fnale we should move online. Three weeks. They said we tried very hard on the 26th. Right now we'll sing tears for fears. Mad World. Country Road auf japanisch. The act of people who are affected. There is a debate you want to clean up with a theoretical discourse. Be, become. Words like baby and love. A language inside a language where we go-old-told-untold, bed-head-dead-instead, above-love-grows-bones. I just want to read a way of talking, the context we move in. A loop like a memory would interest me, the frame somehow to everything that happened. I will have, das Bild opposed. Looking is my own. Sentences that might mean on page eleven you're lost. Hidden there the rest of your lives. Or next week. Silver waves touch the space in front of me that moment. Chapter four is always severe. It's about das Dasein. Chapter five. American brains watch Hitchcock, Tarkovsky. Then chapter seven is short. It's really a question looking at you. Auf deutsch: eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeinmal ein Ei sein. They don't have natural enemies so they're really friendly. Ein Gespräch mit mir selbst. Ein bisschen kaputt. 14 Uhr auf dem Bodenfenster. Kaum Himmel sehen. Keine rote Schuhe. Yellow tongue in Vergangenheit. Was das sein soll. Sit down and join us for an end. Friction of saying there, I'm doing it, you didn't know pictures break. The screw driver cum-bath Youporn genres escalating a position. She goes violence is circumstance. Amphibious diseases are we looking at? This feels under nice. In one second dia positive. Drawings of maps to be lost. A way to somewhere. He gave me some words by email. They are from different countries in Europe. You don't have to think too much. The battery is dead on the table. Along with the following: Let me long. What do you collect. Stories about grace. It is blue like grease between conversations. A way with an excuse. A question something to understand. Do they politic, something an effort, every time you can't. Abstractures a platform. The risk and maybe the direction. It could be a field, the creation of a novel, autonomic kind of place. "

+ Kera MacKenzie
TEACHING A CARTON OF EGGS TO DANCE, 2013
Taking a cue from João Maria Gusmão and Pedro Paiva's short films, and their self-described interest in "recreational metaphysics," in this video, a character is caught, via a surveillance camera, attempting to animate a carton of eggs. While this feat might(?) remain impossible at the site of the event, the camera tells a different story. In this fictional realm, objects are transformed into subjects via the right touch, spin, gravity, and weight.

Artist Bio:
Kera MacKenzie works at the intersection of set design, installation, video, photography, and script writing. Her work addresses issues of translation between mental and physical spaces, often employing a methodology inspired by metaphysical detective novels. Her videos have been shown at screenings and exhibitions in New York, Chicago, Boston, and Berlin. MacKenzie has done artist residencies at Culturia in Berlin, Acre Projects in Wisconsin and will be attending the High Desert Test Sites 2013 residency, traveling from Joshua Tree, California to Albuquerque, New Mexico. She studied at Bennington College, the Art Institute of Boston, Transart Institute and is currently finishing her MFA in Moving Image at The University of Illinois at Chicago.

+ DORTHE SLEJ PEDERSEN
EVERYTHING RELATED TO HURT, 2013
THIS WORK IS CENTERED AROUND MY THOUGHTS AND REFLECTIONS ON HURT RELATED TO VARIOUS PEOPLE IN MY LIFE. NOT BECAUSE THERE HAS BEEN AN INTENDED ACTION OF HURT FROM THEIR SIDE BUT RATHER DUE TO THE EMOTIONS I ASSIGN TO OUR RELATIONSHIP. IN MY WORK I AM INTERESTED IN THE COMMUNICATION AND MISCOMMUNICATION, THE LANGUAGE WE OURSELVES CREAT IN RELATION TO PEOPLE AROUND US. THE MAJORITY OF MY WORK IS EXPLORING THE NOTION OF LOVE; WITHIN THAT LIES ALSO HURT.

Artist Bio:
Dorthe Slej Pedersen was born in Denmark in 1983. After working many years in Fashion she discovered that it wasn’t her call, and she moved on into the art world and is now studying and working as an artist. Between 2009-2011 she lived and worked in Berlin where she among other was part of a performance group creating new live soundtracks to classic movies. Her first exhibition took place in September 2012 in Halle, Germany. She is presently living in London where she is following a Fine Arts Course at Central Saint Martins. From early on she had the urge to tell stories, which is the sole of her practice. She works with mediums such as writing, moving images, photography and sound.

A performance on the joy of being sent through a train of thoughts; on the satisfaction of forcing someone through a line of thoughts; on the construction of meaning from body-related concepts; on the authority of philosophical text; on measuring the range, in which the brain can be influenced while reading philosophy; on the numbing effect of theory; and on the question, which kind of incomprehensibility makes us happy and which kind of incomprehensibility makes us angry. The performance refers to Marshall McLuhan, Gilles Deleuze, Karl Heinz Bohrer and others. The language of the performance is German.

Nadaphysics is the science of that which deals with the existence of the nonexistence and the nonexistence of the existence. It is represented by the members of the Equipe Nadaphysique:
Ariston Baton, who suffers from a rare kind of sleeping sickness, has – of necessity – specialized in short and very short poems. His favourite genres are Blitzgedichte, Superkurzgeschichten, Sekundenbücher, Gnomsentenzen, Zyklopädien, Lapidarpoeme and Flüchtigkeitsapophtegmen.
Vizudaru Nono’s pictures and videos are plain, unpretentious and simple, always trying to be as close to nothingness as possible.
Sugar Ray Buckmiller is responsible for the background music at nadaphysical exhibitions and musical settings of Ariston Baton’s poems and Vizudaru Nono’s videos. His current project Fred & Luna plays repetitive and tuneful electronic music in the tradition of 70s and 80s Krautrock bands."

+ 'OST' – LIVE AUDIO BOOK by katrin herzner

In 2010 Katrin Herzners walk in a straight line towards the east on the Eurasien Continent began.

Solely equipped with a backpack, tent and compass the hike started in Freiburg, South Germany. In several stages she has already covered 1500km. The seventh part will continue east from the Carpathian mountains at walnut tree close to Rishkany in Moldavia.

In front of her lay the plain areas north of the black sea veined by big east European rivers. For the area is intensely used as ground for agricultural production, her travel will be affected by chance encounters with the Moldavian and Ukrainian people. She will recognize if it will be possible to cross Transnistria, breakaway territory and state with limited recognition between Moldavia and Ukraine.

+ 'In Search of the Perfect Intervention' – a video exhibition by MATTHEW CROOKES

+ 'Collective Authorship' – coffee sessions by Campus Novel

Collective Authorship is a performative post-narration which draws on a process of coffee sessions. In Greece it is a common practice to invite friends for coffee. In these gatherings coffee is the pretext for us to get together and spend time engaged in casual conversation, in which various topics freely succeed one another. The gravity of the issues depends on the mood of the participants; however, more often than not, people find themselves engaged in political discussion, usually concerning various aspects of the ongoing Crisis. Our aim in Direct Actions is to become ourselves temporary hosts and create the context where we can receive anyone willing to spend some time and have a cup of coffee with us.

The group consists of Giannis Cheimonakis, Giannis Delagrammatikas, Foteini Palpana, Giannis Sinioroglou and Ino Varvariti
