Anolis garmani and me

My interests lie in understanding the biomechanical and physiological mechanisms underlying the movement of animals. Specifically, I am interested in muscle function and how it is affected by ecological demands placed on it. I strive to use comparative studies to understand the relationship between morphology, physiology, and ecology in both aquatic and terrestrial systems. I am currently working on a project that looks at how muscle function and kinematics of the hindlimb and forelimb alter with changes in incline and perch diameter in anoles.


Techniques of Interest:
  • Electromyography (EMG) - A method that uses electrodes implanted into muscles to measure their in vivo electrical activity during locomotion.
  • Sonomicrometry - A technique in which small, piezoelectric crystals are implanted into muscles to monitor changes in muscle fascicle length as an animal moves.
  • In situ muscle physiology - In situ muscle preps allow us to explore force-length and force-velocity curves of whole muscles or individual muscle fibers.
  • Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) - A technique which allows the visualization of fluid flow through illumination of neutrally buoyant particles with a laser.
  • High Speed Video - This is essential for capturing and analyzing fast animal movements.

Research Experiences



PhD Dissertation (2010-present)

Currently, I am working in Dr. Tim Higham's comparative biomechanics laboratory where I investigate the effects of incline and perch diameter on muscle function and kinematics in both the hindlimb and forelimb of Anolis. In 2012, I published the first portion of this work, which dealt with how incline and perch diameter impacted the three-dimensional limb kinematics of Anolis carolinensis. This work generated hypotheses about how motor control and physiology of muscles might be affected by changes in substrate characteristics. Hypotheses relating to the relationship between muscle activity patterns and kinematics in the context of arboreality were tested and published in Proceedings of the Royal Society B in March, 2014.

Ratfish Locomotion - Honours Thesis (2009-2010)

My honours thesis at the University of British Columbia (Vancouver, Canada) consisted of a comparison of functional morphology and swimming strategies of two cartilaginous fishes, the spotted ratfish, a labriform swimmer, and the spiny dogfish, a small shark which uses its caudal fin to swim (pdf). This project originally began as a field project (summer 2009) at the Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre on Vancouver Island and in addition to dissections, involved optaining of high speed video of the ratfish swimming in a 12m x 2m x 1m flume at the marine station. In addition to this, I gathered particle image velocimetry data using a pulse laser in an effort to understand force production generated by the aquatic flight in this fish. I am currently analyzing this data.

Sturgeon Physiology - NSERC USRA (2009)

In the summer of 2009 I was awarded a Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada Undergraduate Student Research Award which I held in the Brauner lab at the University of British Columbia. There, I assisted, among others, Daniel Baker (PhD candidate) in his research investigating the physiological bases of carbon dioxide tolerance in white sturgeon. In addition to working directly with the sturegon, this experience introduced me to a variety of techniques and equipment, including how to perform Na+/K+ ATPase, lactate, and cell-free translation assays and how to use atomic absorbance spectrometers and spectrophotometers.

Cancer Lab Research Assistant Co-op (2005)

From January to June 2005, my last year of high school, I was selected to be the first in an initiative to promote research and science among secondary school students. I was placed in Dr. Gabriel DiMattia's oncology laboratory at the London Regional Cancer Program in London, Ontario, Canada, where I served as a lab technician and research assistant. I worked with Dr. DiMattia's masters students and in addition to training incoming lab technicians, I learned several isolating techniques including Southern, Northern, and Western blotting as I assisted in their research investigating the relationship between stanniocalcin hormones and estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer.

The Lab


Higham lab photo I am a Ph.D. candidate in Dr. Tim Higham's biomechanics lab at the University of California, Riverside. The lab studies a variety of aspects of functional morphology and biomechanics. Just to give you a glimpse of the diverse interests, my lab mates investigate the relationship between locomotion and feeding in frogs, sculpins, and centrarchids (Emily Kane), the relationship between habitat use/substrate microstructure and adhesive morphology in Rhoptropus geckos from Namibia (Clint Collins), the impacts of tail autotomy and tail regeneration on locomotor kinematics and kinetics of leopard geckos (Kevin Jagnandan), the evolution of symmetry in gecko feet (Vicky Zhuang), the evolution and biomechanics of sidewinding in snakes (Jessica Tingle), and functional morphology and functional ecology of tetrapods (Emily Naylor). In the time I've been here, we've had some really great lab members who have since moved on to other positions. Aleksandra Birn-Jeffery came to us from her Ph.D. at the Royal Veterinary College, studied the effects of substrate texture and incline on toe kinematics in geckos, and currently works in the Federle Lab at Cambridge, UK. Bill Stewart came to us from UC Irvine, looked at the active control of gecko adhesion in our lab, and is currently working in the Liao Lab at the Whitney Laboratory for Marine Bioscience. Emily Kane did her Ph.D. with us looking at the integration of locomotion and feeding in sculpins and centrarchids and is currently doing an NSF postdoc in the Ghalambor Lab at Colorado State University. Jeff Olberding got his Master's degree with us in which he investigated jumping and inverse dynamics in collared lizards. He is now at the University of South Florida in the Deban Lab.
