Celebrate Small Business Saturday November 26 with Maryland’s 28 Main Street Communities

A tradition since 2010, Small Business Saturday encourages people to show their support for their communities by shopping and buying local. This year’s event will be held November 26, and there’s no better place to celebrate than in Maryland’s Main Street communities. From Cambridge to Cumberland and Taneytown to Takoma Park, Maryland's 28 designated Main Streets are filled with historic architecture, boutique shops, art galleries, and the opportunity for both residents and visitors to experience seasonal events and charm.

"As you travel across Maryland, there is no shortage of opportunities to visit a Main Street where you'll find local shops and galleries, cafés and signature holiday events," said Liz Fitzsimmons, executive director, Maryland Office of Tourism. "With the holidays upon us, Small Business Saturday is the perfect time to visit a Maryland Main Street. It's also a great time to shop and support downtown Ellicott City, as many of the businesses have reopened in time for holiday shopping."

This year's awardees included Cambodian traditional music master Chum Ngek (pictured, seated at center) of Montgomery County; Trimper's Rides and Amusements, the nation's oldest family-run amusement park, located in Ocean City; and the Steyers and Shinholts, whose maple syrup-making traditions go back generations in Garrett and Allegany counties.

On Friday, November 18, Rich Gilbert of the Maryland Office of Tourism joined Bill Griggs, Gaylord National’s new Tour & Travel Executive, to host a number of area tour operators and industry trade associations for a behind-the-scenes preview of ICE! An indoor winter wonderland, this year’s theme is “Christmas Around the World,” celebrating various countries' holiday celebrations. The group was able to experience the magic of more than two million pounds of hand-carved ice sculptures and slide down a collection of two-story ice slides. All kept at a chilly 9 degrees!

Participants included representatives from the states of Maryland, New York, Pennsylvania and Virginia; associations represented included Maryland Limousine Association, Maryland Motorcoach Association, National Association of Motorcoach Operators, National Tour Association, and Student Youth & Travel Association.
