Light City Baltimore

Bringing more than 50 free concerts and performances, a 1.5 mile BGE Light Art Walk, and the unique, “Light City U” innovation conference, Light City Baltimore is the first light festival in the nation. The festival has garnered strong support from both the public and private sectors, according to Calvin Butler, chief executive officer, BGE, and chair of Light City Baltimore. “In less than one year $3.5 million has been raised on an idea: Light City. That’s coming from the community – foundations, educational institutions, and businesses in the city,” says Butler.

Performances on tap include free concerts by Dan Deacon, Telesma, and Thomas Dolby; The Amazing Traveling Light and Shadow Circus, Single Carrot Ballet Ballistique, and more. Light City U features conferences on social justice, health, creative innovation, and sustainability, the last of which includes a presentation by Butler. “Light City U features innovative people coming to speak about solutions to move us forward,” says Butler. “When you know the problems exist, why not be a part of the solution and use Light City U as the platform?” For more information on the festival, visit lightcity.org.

The Annapolis Film Festival -- March 31-April 3 -- has quickly grown to be a real player in the film festival world. “It’s just our fourth year,” says festival director Patti White, “but you’d never know it. This thing came on big.” The festival drew 2,500 attendees in its first year and grew to more than 7,500 in its second and third.
