Economic Impact of the Arts Shows Strong Growth in FY2015 |
|
Maryland’s non-profit arts sector had a $1.16 billion total impact on the state’s economy, an increase from $1.05 billion in FY2014, according to a Maryland Cultural Data Project – Fiscal Year 2015 report. The study also showed Maryland’s non-profit arts sector supported 14,564 full-time jobs, a 20 percent increase, up from 12,155 in the previous year. Salaries in the sector also grew by 10 percent, and state and local revenues grew by 11 percent. Theresa Colvin, Director, MSAC, (pictured above) thanked Governor Larry Hogan for his strong support of the arts while presenting the study’s results during the Commerce Department’s “First Monday” meeting on December 5. OTD’s Marci Ross Addresses Grow Maryland Summit
Marci Ross, Assistant Director, Tourism Development, OTD, addressed the inaugural Grow Maryland Summit in Stevensville on December 1. The Grow Maryland Summit: The Future of Value-Added Agriculture was the first event of its kind devoted to this aspect of the state’s economy. (Value-added agriculture is altering or processing a raw agricultural product in a way to increase its value to the consumer. This in turn brings more revenue to the farmer, producer, or processor, and can be a powerful driver for tourism.) The conference was hosted by Grow Maryland and the Rural Maryland Council. Grow Maryland is a part of Grow and Fortify, a Baltimore-based management firm that develops and supports organizations that specialize in value-added agriculture, agritourism, craft beverages and other related industries. They launched Grow Maryland in 2015 as their non-profit arm, after a series of listening sessions throughout the state to help determine the needs of the industry.
