Oakley Cabin was originally part of the Oakley Farm, which occupied a portion of Colonel Richard Brooke’s large land tract known as “Addition to Brooke Grove.” Brooke was a Revolutionary War hero known as “the Fighting Quaker.” He built the “big house” called Oakley in 1764, which was destroyed in the 1970s.

Brooke died in 1788 and willed all of his property to his only child, Ann, who later married William Hammond Dorsey. They had five children. Like her father, Ann and William never lived on the Oakley Farm. Instead, William built their home, Dumbarton Oaks, in Georgetown. When Ann died in 1802, William sold all of his Georgetown property and moved to Oakley, where he died in 1818. The Dorseys’ son, Richard B. Dorsey, transformed Oakley into a farm, on which his 23 slaves worked.

Dr. William Bowie Margruder bought Oakley farm in 1836. A local doctor to both white and black families, Margruder owned 19 slaves to help farm the land. Prior to 1879, two more cabins were built on the property, though neither remain. After Dr. Margruder died in 1873, Josiah J. Hutton purchased the farm.

According to census records from 1880 to 1920, between 22 and 37 people lived in the three cabins. The residents were both black and white, and worked as farm laborers, carpenters, blacksmiths, and laundresses. They likely shared household tasks and sold produce and hand-made articles to travelers on the Brookeville Road. The cross-section of cultures found here is representative of the unique African-American folk experience.

Step inside Oakley Cabin and immerse yourself in the history of those who have lived there. The main room on the ground floor wraps around an open hearth, and in a small adjoining room, 19th-century tools and artifacts are displayed. These items were excavated during archaeological digs around the park’s grounds. The two rooms are divided by a bead board partition wall, and a boxed staircase leads to the upper loft. Archaeologists are currently piecing together evidence in an attempt to date the construction of the cabin.

The 1½-story oak and chestnut log cabin is a reflection of vernacular architecture. The logs are joined with dovetail joints and chinked with stones, now largely covered with cement. The dove-tailed notching and artful pegging represent superb craftsmanship. The rafters on the roof are “bird-mouthed” over the top log that serves as a plate. The floor of the first level sits on a double sill with a notch in the foundation to allow room for two supporting logs – one for the floor and one for the wall.

The cabin sits on a 2-acre tract running along Reddy Branch. The mill pond for Newlin’s Mill was located in the low area behind the building. A trail, partially laid inside the old millrace, leads from the cabin to the site of the mill at the intersection of Brookeville Road and Georgia Avenue. You’ll see numerous wild plants here, many of which are edible or medicinal and were used by local people. Hawks, foxes, deer, raccoons, and other wildlife can often be seen from the cabin or trail, which also passes stone quarries used to dig local stone.

It was one of the first planned Victorian commuter suburbs, centered on the B&O railroad station in Takoma, D.C., and bore aspects of a spa and trolley park.

Takoma was originally the name of Mount Rainier, 'snow-covered mountain'. In response to a wish of Gilbert, the name Takoma was chosen in 1883 by DC resident Ida Summy, who believed it to mean 'high up' or 'near heaven'. The city of Tacoma in Washington State is also named after Mount Takhoma (Mount Rainier).

BeeTree Preserve is 263 beautiful acres of forests, fields, streams and wetlands located just 25 miles north of Towson in northern Baltimore County. Acquired by a group of generous and forward-thinking families, the eight parcels of land that became BeeTree Preserve were donated to Towson Presbyterian Church in 1965. Named for Beetree Run, a trout stream that meanders through the property, BeeTree Preserve's natural beauty and resources have welcomed visitors and inhabitants — both animal and human — for hundreds of years.

BeeTree Preserve not only offers miles of scenic trails for your use but many other facilities as well. Two open air pavilions (one with a fireplace), men's and women's restrooms, a large play field, and Adirondack shelters for camping are available for church, scout, school, business or family gatherings. Additional facilities are planned to make your visit to BeeTree Preserve as comfortable and delightful as possible.

The final is located less than a quarter mile from the given coordinates, but you must gather some information at this location and one other before you can determine the final's coordintates. You'll be looking for information in order to find the values A through E and J through N.

N39 AB.CDE W076 JK.LMN

Park at the posted coordinates. Immediately to the southwest, you'll find a small cemetery. Look for concrete markers about 5-6" square set in the ground at the corners of the cemetery. Find the two marked 1-1 and 1-17. Count the number of headstones in that row. You should have a two-digit number.

D and K both equal the second digit of that number

M equals the first digit of that number

E and L both equal the second digit minus the first digit.

Near the cemetery parking area, you'll find a trailhead for the Red (and later the Orange) trail. A short hike, mostly downhill, will bring you fairly close to two bonus caches. Alternately you could drive to the next information gathering location and pass up the bonus hides, but why would you do that? Head toward the waypoint for the Torrey C. Brown Rail Trail. To the left and right after you cross the bridge, look for brown signs with white lettering.

The one to the right gives the distance to the PA line.

J = the value of either digit in that distance

The distance to Freeland will give you the values of A and B.

A = twice the number before the decimal

B = the digit after the decimal

Just to the left of the Bee Tree Road sign is another brown and white sign. On its penultimate line is an information telephone number.

C = the last digit in that 7-digit number

N = the first digit in the same number

If you hiked down, you can now take any of the trails back up to where you left your car at the cemetery. And if you have the time and desire, you can pick up the bonus caches now. One is only 300 or so feet away. But don't get distracted, you have the coordinates now for the actual CAM cache, but you haven't found it yet.

There are two other options in the way the information is gathered. The first is to drive to stage 2. Gather the necessary information there. Find the nearby bonus cache. Then drive up to the parking area and find the necessary information there. You can walk one way to find the bonus cache and walk the other to find the CAM cache. Option two is to park one vehicle at stage 2 and then you only have to walk one way.

The cache is beneath an unnatural pile of sticks at the base of a standing tree and next to a fallen tree. You may only search for this cache from during daylight hours. Groups larger than 10 should reserve time with the church.

Deep Creek Lake State Park is located in Western Maryland’s Garrett County. The park encompasses over 1,800 acres and adjoins Deep Creek Lake Natural Resources Management Area and its 3,900-acre man-made lake. Deep Creek Lake State Park lies just west of the Allegheny Front on a large plateau known as the Tablelands or Allegany Highlands. Its location at the southernmost end of Meadow Mountain places it west of the Eastern Continental Divide and within the Mississippi River watershed. The park gets its name from the lake, which was a hydroelectric project, constructed on Deep Creek in the 1920's by the Youghiogheny Hydroelectric Company. The Deep Creek Lake State Park Complex also includes Sang Run State Park and the Youghiogheny Wild River Natural Environmental Area.

Rock Hall, "The Pearl of the Chesapeake" The city, named for a mansion made of white sandstone, was originally called Rock Hall Crossroads and was incorporated in 1908. It is the center of Kent County's maritime industries and is also a popular destination for art, music, culture and wildlife enthusiasts. Even before the establishment in 1707, the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries have shaped the economic cultural development of the town. In the early years, the bay served as a commercial link to other populated areas on the western shore, such as Baltimore, Annapolis and Virginia, as well as northern areas such as Philadelphia and New York.

THE CACHE IS NOT AT THE POSTED COORDINATES!

Chesapeake City was originally named "The Village of Bohemia" or "Bohemia Manor" by Bohemian colonist Augustine Herman but the name was changed in 1839 after the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal (C&D Canal) was built in 1829. Today, the town contains numerous old homes from that era that have been converted into bed and breakfasts, restaurants, shops, and the local historical museum. Some others serve as private residences for the "newer" community members. You will tour the South Chesapeake City Historic District learning about the building of the canal and the growth of the local community and economy while collecting information to help you find the location of the cache container. Each stage will provide you one of the numbers required to come up with the containers location's GPS coordinates. Once you have visited the stages and collected all required information, use these coordinated to locate the cache container: N 39* 31.ABC W 075* 49.DEF.

Waypoint 1: In mid-17th century, Augustine Herman, a mapmaker and Prague native who served as a Dutch envoy, saw that two great bodies of water, the Delaware River and the Chesapeake Bay, were separated only by a flat, narrow strip of land. Herman proposed that a waterway be built to connect the two to shorten water travel between Baltimore and Philadelphia by more than 300 miles. Using information at this stage, find the Laborers' average daily wage. Note how many dimes for one day's work. This will be "A".

Waypoint 2: This building is considered to be the oldest in Chesapeake City and was first opened as a Tavern and Inn. The building was meticulously restored in 1983 by Allaire Dupont. As noted at this location, the doors' locks are replicas or original ones that were found in what part of the building? We will use the number of letters in that part of the building as "B".

Waypoint 3: Canal traffic initially created a thriving port, creating much growth. Homes, stores, warehouses and shops sprang up as canal traffic increased. A century later, though, the federal government took the canal over. Widening and deepening it, and later, an improved bridge, allowed supertankers to pass through without stopping, reducing visitor traffic. From the left side of the sign at this location, locate the first set of numbers, representing a year. Use the third number in that year as "C".

Waypoint 4: The park at this location was dedicated in honor of a Doctor and his wife, who were instrumental in early restoration of town buildings and establishing the Chesapeake City District Civic Association. Using the information, subtract the year the park was renovated and rededicated from the year the sign was donated by the Chesapeake City District Civic Association. The resulting single digit number will be "D".

Waypoint 5: This commercial building was built by Ralph Rees around 1914. It started as a store, and has also been an agency for cars, another store, and Town Hall. Using the information at this location, identify the types of "stores" it was at different times. Each type of store has the same number of characters. Use that number as 'E".

Waypoint 6: The National Bank of Chesapeake City was located here for 83 years from the time it was built until 1986. Note the year it was built and use the second digit in that year as "F".

This is one of 12 caches placed for CAM 2020. You are required to find the nine physical caches and have your choice for number 10. It will be between 2 virtuals and a wherigo.

If you find all twelve, you will receive a special icon to download and put on your geocaching profile. Each location was picked specifically to give cachers a taste of the state and show you its beauty. By combining all of the caches, you'll be able to see why Maryland is truly "America in Miniature". We hope you enjoy them!

The cache is located on the shores of the Assawoman Bay in Worcester County, MD. Captain James Bishop, a local merchant, occupied much of this land in the mid 1800's. This land was particularly important to him since it contained a landing which provided access to the coastal bays and surrounding waters for commerce and fishing. The landing is known as Lone Cedar Point. This bay front beach is fondly called "The Point" by locals It has a beautiful view of the Ocean City, MD skyline. The cache is in Maryland, however, the bay front beach and trail access to the cache is located in The Bayside Community, a residential community near Fenwick Island, DE.

Please respect the community and the posted speed limits. The cache is only available during daylight hours. Access is by a state road, not a private road. Parking is public because of the seasonal waterfront restraurant, in which their management is aware of cache placement. Though a rare occurrence, it is possible that a storm surge, or unusually high tide may require boots/wading. It is also possible to kayak or jet ski to this cache from Ocean City.

In 1751, a line was surveyed straight across the Delmarva Peninsula, called the Transpeninsular Line (at approximately 38*27'N), the eastern half of which forms the North-South border between Delaware and Maryland. A historical sign as well as remnants of the original stone can be seen near the trailhead coordinates.

The cache is an ammo can and is at the end of the beach, rear center on the cape, is a live tree with a stump behind it. Cache is tethered due to possible high tide. The cache is only available from dawn til dusk.
