Heart Of Memphis
Robin McKelle & The Flytones
Review by David Bowling
Robin McKelle established herself as one of the better jazz vocalists working today with the release of Introducing Robin McKelle (2006) and Modern Antique (2008). During 2010 she took a chance and changed directions by issuing Mess Around, which explored such artists as Leonard Cohen, Doc Pomus, and Willie Dixon. Now she has taken another leap of faith.
McKelle has developed into a more than competent songwriter and now she has composed 11 what can best be described as soul songs. Heart Of Memphis finds her adapting her voice and material to classic soul. Her jazz foundation enables her to present a smooth vocal style that is a soothing listen.
Songs such as “Like A River,” “Baby You’re The Best,” “It’s Over This Time,” and the title track are modern day soul at its best.
Heart Of Memphis is another interesting release by a versatile singer and is an excellent way to spend an hour or so.
